Job Description

Kalwun Development Corporation Ltd is an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community controlled organisation currently seeking to fill the following vacancy within our Child, Youth and Family Support Services division.  The Kalwun Child, Youth and Family Support Services division administers the Family Wellbeing Service, Family Participation Program, Early Learning Program and the Kinship and Foster Care programs within the South East Qld region.

About the Role

This role provides intensive, culturally responsive support to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children, young people, and their families to prevent family breakdown, maintain care arrangements, support reunification, and strengthen connections to culture, kin, and community. We’re looking for dedicated Intensive Family Intervention Specialist's to support families in keeping children safe at home, strengthening connections, and promoting cultural identity.

Position Duties

  • Provide intensive, in-time support to families to prevent children from entering care or to support reunification.
  • Work closely with families to develop culturally safe family preservation and reunification plans.
  • Support children to remain safely at home, maintain stability in care arrangements, or transition back home.
  • Conduct regular home visits and community outreach to provide hands-on support and guidance.
  • Address parenting challenges, conflict resolution, and family strengthening through coaching and mentoring.
  • Ensure children and families maintain strong connections to culture, community, and kinship networks.
  • Advocate for families to ensure culturally appropriate responses from child protection and other services.
  • Provide immediate crisis support to families facing housing instability, financial hardship, or relationship breakdown.
  • Facilitate or connect to focus groups, parenting programs, and healing sessions tailored to family needs.
  • Maintain accurate case notes, assessments, and progress reports in line with program and funding requirements.

Essential Selection Criteria

  1. Relevant qualification in Social Work or Community Services
  2. Minimum 12 months experience in family support, child protection, or related fields
  3. Strong understanding of culturally responsive and trauma-informed practice
  4. Strong knowledge of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander family structures, cultural practices, and community dynamics.
  5. Experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children, young people, and families in a child protection, family support, or community services role.

Additional Information

  • This position requires the successful applicant to satisfy a national criminal history check and hold a current drivers' license.
  • A Blue Card for working with children is a mandatory requirement. The 'No Card No Start' law applies to this position - a Blue Card must be obtained prior to commencement.
  • As this is a risk-assessed role under the Child Protection Act 1999, the successful applicant will be required to obtain a LCS2 clearance withing 3 months of commencing employment. 
  • *IDENTIFIED POSITION - To perform this role it is essential that the person who holds the position be an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 that applicants are Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders.
