Job Description

Kalwun Development Corporation Ltd is an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community controlled organisation currently seeking to fill the following vacancy within our Health and Wellbeing Services division. Kalwun Health and Wellbeing Service delivers a primary health care service to the people of the Gold Coast & surrounding communities.

The Deadly Choices program aims to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to make healthy choices for themselves and their families and encourage our people to access their local Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service to have their annual health check.  Deadly Choices has a school and community based education program which encourages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be healthy role models for family, friends and the broader community networks.  The education program is developed to provide education to school students about chronic disease, nutrition, physical activity and tobacco education.

About the Role

As a Deadly Choices Program Officer you will be responsible for the delivery of school and community-based health education, promotion and prevention activities.  Kalwun is seeking a vibrant, fit & energetic person willing to commit to a great innovative role within the Deadly Choices team.

Position Duties

  • Build and maintain strong relationships and provide culturally appropriate services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community
  • Assist in the logistics and delivery of the Deadly Choices Education Program in schools and community
  • Undertake and promote Kalwun services and refer participants for Aboriginal Health Checks, to other health programs and clinical advice for chronic disease as appropriate
  • As directed, undertake the effective facilitation, instruction and role modelling of key health messages and Deadly Choices program modules, including; leadership, chronic disease, physical activity, nutrition, harmful substances, tobacco and smoking cessation, Medicare access to primary health care
  • Undertake the distribution of program surveys and their collection, and ensure appropriate records of all program activities are maintained.

Essential Selection Criteria

  1. Excellent written and communication skills
  2. Able to communicate, engage effectively and work together with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  3. Ability to work independently and to demonstrate initiative
  4. Ability to work across the Gold Coast region as required and travel to Brisbane for training and workshops
  5. Working with Children Blue Card (must have prior to commencement)
  6. Current Criminal History Check (willingness to obtain)
  7. Current Qld C class drivers licence.

Additional Information

  • This position requires the successful applicant to satisfy a national criminal history check and hold a current drivers' license.
  • A Blue Card for working with children is a mandatory requirement. The 'No Card No Start' law applies to this position - a Blue Card must be obtained prior to commencement.
  • *IDENTIFIED POSITION - To perform this role it is essential that the person who holds the position be an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 that applicants are Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders. A Confirmation of Aboriginality will need to be provided.
